JAMIE Mitchell is christening the prototype for what will be his signature stand up paddleboard, the stillness of Currumbin Creek barely disrupted as he shears through the water. It's something to observe, timeless in the way Jamie's movements conjure historic images of islanders standing on rough-hewn craft and stroking their way through the break to check nets and pots or to greet strangers in tall ships. Yet so too is the image slightly incongruous, particularly given modern board paddlers are most often seen on their bellies or knees as they use their arms to power through the surf. However, Jamie makes it all seem so natural, his effort so apparently effortless the water offers only token resistance, at times appearing simply to move out of his path. Mayor saves race, but paddlers hit rocks in San Francisco by Kevin Cody Published October 1, 2009 California’s hopes for breaking Australian lifeguard Jamie Mitchell’s grip on the Hennessey’s International Paddleboarding Championships were dashed Saturday on the rocks in San Francisco Bay, literally. Mitchell has won the International Championships every year since its inception in 2002, with the exception of two years he didn’t compete. The nine-mile San Francisco race started at Aquatic Park near Ghirardelli Square, looped around Angel Island and finished back at the park. Mitchell’s most formidable California challenger was Long Beach lifeguard Tyler Anderson, winner of the Catalina Classic in August, the Hennessey U.S. championship in July, the Rock to Rock in June and just about every other California race this year. AVALON, CATALINA ISLAND - On Sunday, August 30th, the 34th installment of the legendary Catalina Classic Paddleboard Championship will see the greatest number of paddlers yet take on the 32 mile crossing from Catalina Island to Manhattan Beach. An all-time record of 106 paddlers from France, Australia, Hawaii and the U.S.A.'s East and West coasts, will be competing against each other, the elements and the limits of their mental and physical abilities as they race across one of the Pacific's deepest and busiest channels.
"Traditionally, the Classic is a 'champion's championship'," says Catalina Classic Race Director Kyle Daniels. "This year is no different, and we are proud to have Honolua Surf Co. continuing as the event's major sponsor." Molokai to Oahu Paddleboard Race Presented by Rainbow Sandals Molokai to Oahu 26 July 2009 8th consecutive win for Jamie Mitchell: Kanesa Duncan takes women's division Press release, 27 July, 2009 : - - Honolulu -- For the eighth consecutive year, Australian Jamie Mitchell proved he's light years and hard-earned miles ahead of his paddleboard peers, winning the 32-mile Rainbow Sandals Molokai to Oahu Paddleboard Race that is the unofficial world title of the sport. The toughest tidal conditions in years kept Mitchell from breaking the record he set in 2007, coming in 10 minutes slower today at four hours, 58 minutes and 25 seconds. His closest rival, Hawaii's Brian Rocheleau, was more than 20 minutes behind at 5:20:53.
