Bodysurfing as a workout
Local beachbreak too closed out to surf? Shorebreak too big to punch your 18 foot unlimited through?

How about bodysurfing? San Diego lifeguard, Todd Hartman likes to combine a buoy swim with bodysurfing

to get a vigorous but fun workout.

Todd, prepping for the swim

It goes something like this: Put fins on and swim out to the lineup. Catch a few waves riding them in as far as possible.

Swim out past the lineup and around the buoy a quarter mile off the beach. Swim back to lineup and repeat the process until

exhausted. The cardio workout from the swimming is great and bodysurfing waves between laps really breaks up the

workout.

The fun part of the workout.

In Todd's case, the workouts paid off with a spot ...

2008 Surftech Jay Moriarty Memorial Paddleboard Race
press release courtesy of Surftech:

Chad Carvin Wins 7th annual Surftech Jay Moriarity Memorial Paddleboard Race

Record High temperatures, raging fires and a pumping south swell did nothing to dissuade the largest group of participants to ever compete in the Seventh annual Surftech Jay Moriarity Memorial Paddleboard Race. Competitors accustom to the cold, windy and often hazardous ocean conditions of the Monterey Bay showed up to a sheet glass ocean surface and sweltering conditions more associated with races in the tropics. While competition was clearly at the forefront of the participants minds, the spirit of the Jay race has always been about camaraderie and both first time and returning competitors all took the time to catch up with each other and participate in remembering Jay Moriarity, who while both an avid surfer and paddler is remembered most for his voice as a positive role model ...

Chad Carvin wins 2008 Hobie/ Hennesseys Watermans Challenge
press release courtesy of Hobie

With over 90 paddlers hitting the water, the 2008 Hobie / Hennessey's Waterman's challenge delivered some of the best paddle racing so far this year. Offering paddlers a choice of either a 8 or 4 mile course, paddleboarders and stand up paddlers from across the experience spectrum, young and old, short and tall made a showing. For some it was all about the race, while for others it was their first time to experience paddleboard racing.

Once again the south wind couldn't resist, and made an academy award showing, but not before unlimited paddleboarder Chad Carvin anahilated the 8 mile course in a scorching 1:10:55 three minutes ahead of second place unlimited paddleboard finisher Steve Woods from South Africa. Brian Szymanski took 1st in stock paddleboard covering 8 miles in 1:20.50 with Mike Carr hitting the beach in second. Christina Powers took the ...
