Catalina Classic whale mid-channel
Along with the mako sharks, sunfish, and dolphins that kept the paddlers company this year, there were several whale
sightings. One of them was captured on video by Pat Kennedy's support crew as they were filming him paddling.
Video by Ryan, and thanks to Pat for sending this in!

Some of the women finishers from the Classic
Here's a few photos of some more of the women that made the 32 mile crossing during last Sunday's Catalina
Classic. It was great to see more women completing the race and hopefully now that there is a specific women's
division, the number of girls paddling will continue to rise.

All photos courtesy of Amanda Calhoun (Amanda wasn't able to do the Classic this year due to the fact she has been doing this!)

The Mako Shark
This year's Classic saw one, if not two, mako sharks harassing the paddlers about 10 miles into the race. According to Michelle Carr who was on a boat supporting for her husband Jeff, a 6-8 foot mako circled several of the paddlers including her husband before it was driven off by one of the other boats. It then proceeded down the line of racers, startling and bothering about 10 people until it finally swam off. Around the same time, but a little to the north, several other paddlers reported being bothered by a 8-10 foot mako. Whether or not it was the same shark is unknown, but 10 miles off the island, in the middle of the channel, it's not an uncommon event for the racers to run into sharks. All just a part of the bigger picture known as the Catalina Classic.
