Twenty-two brave stand-up paddleboarders (SUPs) faced strong headwinds and cold temperatures Saturday morning for the inaugural Cold Stroke Classic at Wrightsville Beach. But in the end, it was down to one — Michael Owens from Charleston, S.C. —who won the event, finishing in just over 42 minutes.

SUP, a popular sport in Hawaii and on the West Coast, is a relatively new sport in our area. Paddlers stand atop an oversized surfboard ranging from 9 to 18 feet long and propel themselves forward with an extended canoe paddle. From a distance, paddlers appear to be standing on the water’s surface.

The event, sponsored by Coastal Urge at Landfall Center, entailed a 4-mile course circling Harbor Island. Dockside Restaurant and Marina ...

The sport of Ancient Hawaiian kings takes off in South Africa

16 December, 2008 : - - Tuesday saw history in the making as over 50 of South Africa’s top Male, Female and Junior stand up paddlers descended on Canal Walk to battle it out in an attempt to win the first ever inland Stand up paddle boarding event in Africa.

The Men’s Health Canal Challenge presented by Coreban Hawaii was the first of it’s kind with intense racing to the end as athletes race on special stand up boards using special one sided paddles to attain speed.

“The great thing about the event was that the athletes really wanted to use this unique event to give back to the community” said Ivan van Vuuren, contest organizer. ’”all proceeds were donated towards Ikahya Le Themba a non ...

The wind is up-go for a paddle
Windy/ stormy days such as today, can be some of the most fun times to go paddling. Head out directly into the wind, whichever direction it's coming from and paddle until you start to tire. Then spin around and paddle right back to where you came from, but with the added push of the chop, you will cover the same amount of distance in about a third of the time, plus it's really fun to get a 50 yard runner while on your knees. The constant balancing keeps it interesting and it ends up being a good workout as well.

Paddling into the chop and trying to avoid the kiteboarders.

Now comes the fun part, the ride back..

Paddle/Surf
Today the swell dropped off a little, but the Santa Ana weather pattern provided sunny skies and and fairly glassy conditions
for a paddle down the coast with a couple of stops at the reefs to catch a few on the paddleboards.

Jamie Mitchell to take on Jaws
From goldcoast.com.au

December 5th, 2008

A GOLD Coast lifeguard is bracing himself for the moment he comes face to face with the world's most ferocious waves, the 24m walls of water -- the equivalent of an eight-storey tower -- at the surf spot with the chilling name of Jaws.

James Watson, who is pictured on today's front page surfing in South Australia, has travelled the world chasing the biggest swells with friend Jamie Mitchell, but has never conquered Mother Nature's monsters in Maui, Hawaii.

Watson said yesterday that from December 29, he would be awaiting the call to rush to Hawaii to compete in the big-wave, tow-in event.

"It's a feeling like no other when you're at the top of a wave, looking down at a 20-metre drop, nothing matters, it's all about surviving," he said.
