This raucous and hilarious stand-up paddleboard (SUP) surf contest will directly benefit the newly formed San Onofre Foundation. 6th Annual Cold Hands Paddle Recap In Memory of Stephen Dempsey Cabrillo Beach San Pedro, CA Dempsey wouldn’t have wanted us to make such a big fuss about it, but this year’s Cold Hands Paddle was special. Stephen Dempsey was a local South Bay native and glassed surfboards & paddleboards for many years before he recently passed. On Sunday, March 1, 2009 family and friends gathered, along with more than 120 paddlers who “paddled out” at Cabrillo Beach for the start of the 2009 Cold Hands Paddleboard Race. Just before the start, in the middle of the circle formed by the paddlers about 200 yards from shore, Mike Baker, long time friend of Dempsey, called him the “watermen’s waterman”. Paddleboarding History in the Making By: Lani Mucha ![]() Sitting here this afternoon, checking out the surf forecast on the computer for the upcoming week, I found myself looking for other water activities to keep me occupied. (The winter surfing season here in Cocoa Beach has been anything but stellar.) Then I remembered an experience I had back in October of 2008. With no experience at paddleboarding, I borrowed a twelve-foot Bark paddleboard from a friend, with the intention of competing in a race on the Indian River Lagoon that was scheduled for later that month. I took the board out to the Cape Shores Marina in Cocoa Beach to try this new and growing sport.
