Jay Miller

Name:
Jay Miller
Age: 41

Years Paddling: 25 (started with sprint lifeguard races in the 80’s)  Started distance races in 1998.
Weekly Mileage: 30-50 (during the season)

Preferred board length to paddle:

18’

Favorite Paddle route:
16th street Hermosa to R-10 via PV cove with the Donkeys.

Favorite race:
Hennesseys US Championship (raffle and beer)

I Started Paddling Because:

I wasn’t coordinated enough to surf ski or row a dory.

Best Paddling Experience to Date:

2008 Catalina Classic. Threw it all out there…and was happy with the result.

Favorite Thing About Paddling:
Friendship, brotherhood, challenge…raffles…Scott Lincoln (all day paddle fest)!....And beating Jay Russell.

Thing I Hate Most About Paddling:
Not being able to do all the fun races.  I really need to get back to Molokai and redeem myself.

What I Tell Myself to Motivate on Days I Just Don't Want to Paddle:
Yelling kids and the Wiggles…if I stay at home.  Pretty easy decision.

Best "Oh Crap" Moment While In Middle of Ocean:

Rock 2 Rock 2004.  I shared an escort boat with Mark Shulein and Scott Lincoln.  It wasn’t my boat so I was the bastard paddler.  I was in the shipping lane with no escort near.  Big ship approaching…no way to really gauge how close it was, but it was f’ing close.  I put my head down and sprinted for about 10 minutes…listening to Tool and Pennywise thinking about how brutal my death would be.  Thinking this was it…I was going to get mauled by a freighter.  As soon as I realized the bow wake was behind me I sat up on my board and had a major “let down”.  I was almost crying.  I looked behind me and saw a 300’ freighter (not too sure how big those things are) pass about 20 yards away.  The best part was the pack chasing me was on the other side…waiting for the ship to pass.

iPods While Paddling: Godsend or Good Grief?

See last answer.

There's a Head High Swell on a Glassy Day. What do you do? (surf or paddle):

Always want to surf, but during the paddle season I somehow end up paddling.  That is why I suck!

Paddling Season (which month to which month):
March to August.

Bright and early, or nightcap?
Bright and Early!  Sometimes before sunrise.  Ipods are necessary then…If I am going to be eaten by a shark I want to be listening to music.

Downwind paddle or wait for down winds (glassy):

Glassy.  I am intrigued by the wind, but I don’t welcome it.

Caddied the classic for you in 2007, windy as shit, brutal, and somehow you kept a smile on your face and continued to throw out unbelievably bad Jay jokes as you hunkered down to end with a good result. Anyway, that trip was when I decided it's my turn to try this infectious sport. Thanks for being my ultimate coach and motivator Jay!

Jay, you are stud-muffin (for a 41 year old dad) and inspiration. You need to come up to Santa Barbara to school me! Cheers, Mike

Jay .... so this is the secret to avoid becoming an out of shape ex-lifeguard !!! I am inspired to start paddling. i admit the freighter story will keep me close to shore for a while ... nice job ... keep padding.

Jay, much deserved POTW! Besides being the fastest Donkey, he is also the funniest. Thanks for making the long paddles seem shorter...yes, he careered with his wife!

Jay- from one deadhead to another, you are truly inspirational. You know that Jay Russell and JP wake up and throw darts at your picture each morning. Good work!

gplsek  03.04.2009 at 7:01 pm

Jay Russell...this week will be over soon. thanks for the support. Wanna race? Roebee- August 8th was a beautiful day.
roebee  03.05.2009 at 12:13 pm
August 8th might be the day Jerry "died", but we all know that he really just moved on to a higher plane of existence, as most legends do. NOFX on the other hand, are just some punk-lite wannabees trying to get a feeble leg up by running smack about a true icon. Miller, May all of your paddle sessions be into the wind, and may your tiller pull maddeningly to the right, throwing off your paddle stroke and causing your shoulder to ache.

Jay, Were you a Huntington Beach Junior lifeguard in the 1980's (1982-1984?). Please let me know. I think you were in my group. I still surf with the beanie. Patrick Porter San Francisco

Hey Patrick- yeah, I was a HB JG for 8 years then starting guarding for HSB. Remember Mr Ike, Mr Bray, Mr Furlong...good times. Those beanies were epic. Still scarred.

Not as much fun as being a JG instructor at Creek or Sunset, right Jay? Good job for training and surf time. How did you get so fast??

Jay I am stoked to hear to have decided to come back even stronger in Catalina this year.I knew you would not want to miss the 6:00 start at the beach and the mid channel blues that go away at the R-10 See you there Joe
