Gene Boyer

Name:
  Gene Boyer
Hometown: Redondo Beach

Age: 65  (June)
Years Paddling: 5

Weekly Milage:
Early season is about 15 +/- and pre "Classic" is about 40-50.

Preferred board length:
18' Bark.

Favorite Paddle Route:
Over to the "Cove" from "Burnout" to surf stock boards with Miles Pritzkat and Tim Ritter.

Favorite race:
"Catalina Classic". It is a hugh high at the finish.

I Started Paddling Because:
I won a 14' Bark at the luau after the '04 Santa Barbara Island to the Isthmus, Catalina Island. I had escorted Tim Ritter, Miles Pritzkat and Greg Britewell. They took the inflatable back to our boat and told me to paddle. That was my first night paddle drunk on my ass.

Best Paddling Experience to Date:
Two come to mind. The "Malika Run" in the Hennessey '07 Maui race (real windy) and the "08 "Catalina Classic"(not windy)

Favorite Thing About Paddling:
The comraderie and the after race parties.

Thing I Hate Most About Paddling:
Early season cold and windy afternoons. Too much rubber required.

What I Tell Myself to Motivate on Days I Just Don't Want to Paddle:
Get your butt in the water and get it over with. Miles P. and I asked what could be dumber than paddling in some cold windy afternoon and agreed the only thing dumber was we were doing it two nights in a row.

Best "Oh Crap" Moment While In Middle of Ocean:
When Jo Ambrosi and I got bumped by a mako during last years "Catalina Classic".

iPods While Paddling:
Not for me.

There's a Head High Swell on a Glassy Day. What do you do?
I haven't surfed that much last few years. That may change. Paddling through close out waves isn't as much fun as it looks.

Paddling Season:
March to September.

Bright and early, or nightcap?
B & E for speed work with the Donkeys and afternoon for the wind and bump runs.

Downwind paddle or wait for down winds:
Downinders are bitchen. Too much work for an old timer in the glass.

Looking forward to hearing your call-in when entering Cherry. Perhaps we'll have another group spin at the "Star Wars Bar"!!! Who's that background in escort of the ancient one?
Jay Miller  03.19.2009 at 1:06 pm
Gene Boyer...a hero to us all! The fact that you started paddling at the age of 60 makes it hard for anyone to have an excuse for "not doing something". I look forward to another season of paddling with you and your slacker son in law. What is that guys name??? See you at 16th Street. PS. Don't let Joe B bully you into Catalina.

Keep up the great work. I've been applying the "get your butt in the water and get it over with" thought process for paddling (SUP style)in the frigid waters of Lake Tahoe since the beginning of March. Hopefully I'll be able to keep up one day. JR

Holy shit Batman..............shark bait! Those west coast sharks have been chasing MEB for years....no wonder he goes so fast............... Did he say 40-50 miles ????? Most people don't walk that much in a week and here he is sixty something paddling on a 14' or small anyway board in the Pacific. They have places for people like that.....Got to love him !!!!

Gene, You're a myth buster about what's possible at 65, and AARP needs to do a feature story on you to encourage more sextarians to get off their butts and enjoy life fully. I'll be joining you in the 50+ race category this year and look forward to you, Kevin Cody, and I taking the top 3 spots each race....even if we are the only 3 in that category. See you in the water, Tom

Boss, You look good on that board, man. You're the greatest! I have no idea why people refer to you as being in your sixties, you're the youngest person I know. I know seventeen year olds that are ancient compared to you. You and the ocean are meant to be no matter what. You're a natural. I don't remember the story of the Mako though, geez. There's an incentive to paddle faster.

You look like you are really on a mission in that picture Gene. You are an incredible athlete. Life as a paddler is much better than life as a boat driver. I do not think you are ever going back.

Always trying to keep up with you in the water! Still can't believe you are 35 years old...You are a rockstar! :-) cp

Gene - the machine! You're a legend! Let's stop talking and start paddling.
