Kimo Greenwell

Name:
Kimo Greenwell
Hometown: Honolulu, Hawaii

Age: 34
Years Paddling: Little over 3 years

Weekly Mileage:
..…..more in the summer, less in the winter.

Preferred board length to paddle:

Stock

Favorite Paddle route:
Hawaii Kai runs with my friends.

Favorite race:
The whole experience of preparing for and paddling in the Molokai makes
that race the most meaningful for me. There are so many participants in that field of
competitors which I look up to, so just to be a part of that event is pretty special.

I Started Paddling Because:
I got inspired while riding on the escort boat watching my
friends Mike Pietsch and Scott Gamble during the 2005 Molokai.

Best Paddling Experience to Date:
I’ll never forget crossing the finish line in the 2007
Molokai. It was my first time solo-ing and I had the best support team by my side all day.
Special thanks to my wife Kate, Mike Judd, Robi Solmsenn, and the Ano’ai for your
guidance and support!

Favorite Thing About Paddling:

It has taught me so much about the ocean and myself.

Thing I Hate Most About Paddling:
It’s a toss-up between bad rash and coordinating the
logistics of doing a downwind run.

What I Tell Myself to Motivate on Days I Just Don't Want to Paddle:

If it’s during the week, a simple reminder that I will be spending the majority of my day behind a
computer gets me in the water pretty quick.

Best "Oh Crap" Moment While In Middle of Ocean:

My personal best occurred about a year ago when I got picked off by a wave just passed
the Light House at Diamond Head. It was a really windy day, and I took an inside line which
turned out to be a bad call and resulted in a trilogy of “oh crap’s”. The first was when I knew
I was about to be taken out by the whitewater of a swell that had just broken outside of me.
The second was when I lost my sunglasses from trying to hold on to my paddleboard. The
final “oh crap” came when I failed to recover my paddleboard which ended up ghost-riding these
perfect little runners out to sea…….to make a very long story short I was able to recover my board
back with the help of a friend.

iPods While Paddling: Godsend or Good Grief?
Every now and then I’ll paddle with an iPod….but most of the time I’ll opt not to use one.

There's a Head High Swell on a Glassy Day. What do you do? (surf or paddle):
Surf

Paddling Season (which month to which month):
I try to stick with it at some level throughout the year, but I definitely paddle more
during the months of March through September.

Bright and early, or nightcap?

Bright and early. My day is always better if I can get in the
ocean in the morning.

Downwind paddle or wait for down winds (glassy):
I gotta go with the downwind paddle.

For those of you who have never had the pleasure of meeting Kimo, do yourself a favor and take a moment to say hello at the next race. He'll be the one with the ear-to-ear grin at the end of the race while everyone else is doubled over about to throw up. You'll be better for it - Kimo is one of the nicest people you'll ever meet. Bright and early is an understatement for Kimo. We both have to be in an office well before 9 so he is my dawn patrol partner wether surfing or paddling. We'll make the call the night before to meet up at 5:30, I'll show up 10 min early just to show him I can handle, and there he'll be - sitting on the tailgate of his truck in the dark. By the way, on a downwind run a few weeks ago, with me on my UL, he hung just over my shoulder for almost the entire run. I couldn't shake him! He is going to be tough this year.. 5:15 tomorrow, Kimo?
