Now What?
Storage:
Whether you have a 12' or an Unlimited, storage can be tricky. The main factor to consider is keeping the board out of the sun. The sun will eventually deteriorate any board, especially the pad on the deck. Keep it covered and in the shade. If the board has to sit outside for a bit or on your car, keep the pad side down.
Transportation:
Getting your board from point A to point B is easy- just make sure you have rack pads on your car to protect your board. If you surf, you probably already have a good set-up dialed. Strap your board on pad down (Unlimiteds with rudders don't allow this, those are strapped on pad-up- just don't leave it in the sun for too long). Make sure your board is on tight, but not so tight that it causes any pressure dings on the board.
Your First Paddle:
If you aren't as experienced in the water, finding a flat-water zone or launch point will be a bit easier than dodging waves through the surf. Long Beach, Newport Harbor, Bonita Cove, and Marina Del Rey Harbor are popular locations to launch your board. Usually prones will not be required to use a PFD, but check out your local rules/regulations. If you're on a custom, close your vent plug and open it back up once you're out of the water.
Community/ Racing:
Check out our directory of local paddle groups here, or check out our forum for meet-ups and training clubs. Racing season is typically from March-August, with a few races outside those months. Races start short and ramp up throughout the season, which gives you a nice training "map"- starting with shorter 4 milers and building to The Catalina Classic at the end of the season. In recent years, bigger races like the Classic now offer short course events like The Catalina Cup for newer paddlers who aren't ready to log advanced miles yet.
