Hands Only.
With 148 paddlers competing, this race might just be the biggest and most competitive prone only event all year. Dan Mann started this race in 1997, and it's attracted a core group of paddlers since. The course is pretty unique- it loops 11 miles around Coronado Island, so the views along the way include aircraft carriers and various naval ships. Timed with the tide, this race had a fast start- but the water turned slow by the last third. Speeds slowed down and the heat of the day began to take its toll.
Despite the heat, we still saw a blistering fast performance by the Unlimited men- with the top three starting with Lance Lerum in first (1:50:18), Tristan Sullaway in second (1:53:57), and Jack Bark in third (1:54:35). For reference- Lance's avergae mile pace had to be a sub-10 to get that time.
The stock division was led once again by Davy Thomas (2:07:17). Foster Campbell claimed second place (2:11:17), with Liam McCue close behind in third (2:11:32).
The 14' men's division about doubled the men's stock division. We saw Tomas Hinds in first (2:04:2), Kyle Sparks in second (2:09:07), and Deon Lourens in third (2:10:13).
Liz Hunter took the win for the women, coming in at 2:13:27. She was also the 4th stock to cross the finish line. Tiana Pugliese claimed second (2:15:01), and Emily Bark in third (2:19:02). Pretty neat to see 10 Stock ladies, and a few more in the 14' division.
Next up, El Morro. See you in Newport.
