For North Shore residents, the Da Hui 4th of July race has been a staple in the community for 44 years. A race where all people and crafts are welcome, from paddleboards and canoes, to foils or 10 man SUP-squatches donning Yetis full of beer. It's a family race you never want to miss.
This year felt different, as the tragic passing of North Shore lifeguard Tamayo Perry, a legendary surfer, waterman and community leader, was fresh on everyone's hearts. The day dedicated to the Hawaiian hero attracted hundreds of paddlers on all crafts. Lifeguards and friends sported the signature Tamayo leopard print haircut, and began the race to honor their fallen friend.
There are two courses to this race - Short (3.2 miles) and Long (~7.15 miles). The long course starts at Turtle Bay resort and the short begins at Sunset Beach, both finishing with a run up the sand at Waimea Bay.
The long course was won by Lewis Betts, the Aussie getting acclimated to the Hawaiian waters before partaking in the Molokai to Oahu race later this month. He was followed by Wayne Gardener in the Unlimited field. Winning the Stock category was Billy Balding, followed by Jackson Monahan and Gleb Borovok.
But the most exciting race was the short course- young buck Toa Pere took it out over the old dogs. At 15 years old, he is the youngest to ever win this race- we look forward to seeing how he does in Molokai later this month and at Catalina in August.
Finish of the short course - Toa Pere leading the charge
Queen of Pipeline, Moana Jones Wong brought it home on the women's side. Following in her dad's footsteps - Dawson Jones is a Molokai and Catalina race legend.
This race brings out all the heavies - North Shore legends, and surfing world champs past and present.
The vibe and essence of this race truly is something special. All are welcome on whatever craft you have- surfboard, paddleboard, foil, canoe, etc. This year, the Da Hui 4th of July race showcased the strength and passion of the North Shore community- everyone coming together as one in remembrance of Tamayo was a special sight. See you all next year.
