Step into the past with us with some archival photos from past R-10 races and from this year's 2024 race.
Same crew, same place, 25 years later.
If you grew up in the South Bay, you're probably familiar with the R-10 race, even if you don't know much about the prone paddle world. It's one of the few races that really does attract more than the "serious" paddlers: beginners, the fair-weather paddlers, surfers, and the guys who have a dusty board in their side yard.
The Gair family- Ericka at a past R-10, Tim and daughter in 2024
The Gair Family is a staple in the paddle community, with Tim Gair holding the Catalina Classic Unlimited record for the past 25 years. This year we got to see both of his daughters compete in the race alongside him.
Jeff Stoner leading the pack in '99 - Jack Bark takes it in 2024.
This was only Jack's second race of the season but he showed up fast. Starting out with a quick lead from the gun, he kept the lead rounding the buoy and back through the finish.
Then and now: Mel and Anneliese Solberg, Mike and Hogan Inscore
Pretty cool to see the torches passed down through the generations as the kids that grew up watching their parents race from the beach are now the ones crossing the finish line.
Some things never change. And we don't really want them to. See you all next year, and the year after.
